Last week, we discussed some proposed legislation that would amend the Illinois Human Rights Act if passed. However, there is additional legislation being considered by the General Assembly that could affect employers if passed.
House Bill 5155, the Employer Religious or Mandatory Workplace Meeting Act, would prohibit employers from requiring employees to attend employer-sponsored meetings for the purpose of conveying the employer’s opinion about religious or political matters. The legislation prohibits employers from taking any adverse actions against employees as a way to get them to attend such meetings and contains protection from retaliation in the event an employee reports a violation. The legislation authorizes a civil action for enforcement purposes and also contains a posting requirement.
In addition, House Bill 5185 is known as the Employment Application Act. This bill prohibits employers from requiring that employment applications be submitted exclusively online or in another electronic format.
