The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has released its annual statistics showing the total number of charges filed against employers during its most recent fiscal year. The EEOC’s fiscal year ended September 30, 2011. According to the report, the Agency received 99,947 charges of employment discrimination during FY11, as compared with 99,922 charges in FY10.
Although the number of charges did not increase significantly, the dollar amount obtained by the Agency as relief for employees did increase by 12.7%, to $455.6 million from $404 million in FY10. This relief was a result of the Agency’s combined enforcement, mediation and litigation programs. The most significant area of increase was the monetary benefit received as a result of disability charges of discrimination, to $103.4 million from $76.1 million in FY10 (a 35.9% increase).
The following is a breakdown of FY11 and FY10 charges by type. It should be noted that many charges are filed claiming multiple types of discrimination; therefore, the sum of total charges received will be less than the sum of all categories of charges filed.
