U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the release of a new I-9 form, that can be downloaded from their website on August 1. While the older version (with a revised date of 10/21/19) can be used through October 31, 2023, employers should review the new form and implement its use as soon as possible. Use of the new form is required by November 1, 2023.
What’s changed? The new form contains two sections and two supplements aimed at streamlining the I-9 process for employers. Specifically, the following are changes employers should look for:
- The “Preparer/Translator” section is now “Supplement A” which only needs to be provided when necessary.
- The “Reverification and Rehire” section is now “Supplement B” and will only be necessary when applicable.
- The “List of Acceptable Documents” has been revised to include those “receipts” that are acceptable, as well as information regarding employment authorization documentation that is subject to automatic extension.
- A box to check if the employer is using the authorized alternative procedure for remote extension, which is only available to those employers utilizing E-Verify. (Review our Q&A article for details.)
The new form is not only streamlined, but easier for employers and employees utilizing electronic devices, such as tablets or mobile devices.
