On March 13, 2023, Governor Pritzker signed the Paid Leave for All Workers Act, making Illinois only the third state in the nation to mandate that employers offer all employees paid time off for any reason. The law will take effect on January 1, 2024.

Recently the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL), which has enforcement authority under the law, announced that it will provide outreach and compliance assistance regarding the law. This will include issuing guidance and frequently asked questions as well as preparing other educational resources and materials for employers and employees. Unfortunately, the IDOL did not indicate when employers can expect this compliance and educational assistance.

So, to help you prepare for the January 1 compliance obligation, HR Source has scheduled Straight from the Source: Paid Leave for All Workers, a free, virtual, members-only event on June 6, 2023. Join us for a discussion of what we know so far about the Act and how you can start preparing now.

In the meantime, the IDOL is taking employer comments and questions prior to drafting guidance. Employers who wish to submit a comment or question should do so by emailing DOL.PaidLeave@illinois.gov.
